Multicultural May
Somalia Celebration DayThe Ash Class were very lucky to have been visited by lots of parents from Somalia from across the school, who brought with them an AMAZING celebration of their culture! They wore beautiful traditional clothing and taught us all about Somalia, how to say the names of animals and even to count to ten in Somali. They answered the many questions we had about Somalia and we shared the things we had learned already. Then we danced to Somali music and were treated to some DELICIOUS Somali food. The Ash Class cannot thank you all enough. Wa mahadsan tahay!
Making dhiil potsSumaya and Hanan's Mum's showed us pictures of dhiil pots. Dhiil pots are used for carrying milk in Somalia. They are very decorative. We made dhiil pots from clay, adding lots of patterns and beads.
Salaam alaikum! Our in-class Somalia experts - Yasmin, Sumaya, Hanan and Ilyas - taught us how to say hello in Somali: Salaam alaikum!
Parents Visit |
Intercultural DayOn Friday 22nd May we celebrated Intercultural Day across the whole school. Everyone wore their country dress or county colours and brought in our country flags. Parents were invited to attend a PTA Coffee Morning where they brought along traditional treats. We then opened our Multicultural Mini-Museum in the assembly room where all our class projects were on display - members of the student council provided guided tours to parents. After lunch, we held a whole school community flag parade where families joined us with traditional dress and flags as we paraded around the school grounds and then gathered together for a wonderfully colourful photo.
We performed the 'Hello World' song at assembly. Click here for the video: https://youtu.be/HmCL4S1MjeU
Traditional WeavingSome of the Lime Class came down to help us try out some traditional Somali weaving. Somalia has a great tradition of weaving baskets and placemats. It was tricky but we had lots of fun!
Making Somalia flagsWe worked together to paint big Somalia flags to decorate our classroom! We learned that the Somalia flag is light blue with a white star. The five points on the star represent five parts of Somalia.
