Tricky Words
We have begun to learn our Tricky Words in the Ash Class. Tricky words are common words that cannot be sounded out correctly using the Jolly Phonics sounds. The only way these words can be read and spelt correctly is by learning them and having plenty of practise.
By introducing the tricky words slowly, usually three per week, children are more likely to be able to read and spell each of the words correctly. Once we have introduced the tricky word and practised reading and writing it, it is important to reinforce this word regularly when sharing picture books and reading together. Playing 'word hunts' where children can spot the words in their environment also allows the children to recognise the words in context.
In P.E.T.N.S. we used the 'Look, Say, Cover, Write and Check' method of learning spelling. This involves first looking at the word, saying the word, and identifying which part is tricky, covering the word, writing it and then checking the spelling.
When practising the spelling of tricky words we will aim to make it a fun and enjoyable activity using a variety of materials - all of which you can practise at home too - writing the tricky words in sand, paint, shaving foam or glitter. Once your child has practised a few times in a less structured way, give them the opportunity to practise writing the tricky word on coloured paper with pencil colours, markers, chalk and highlighters.
Tricky Word Lists will be posted here - and we will be introduced two-three words from these lists per week.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
